Planètes – Film stéréoscopique pour planétarium

Planètes, voyage dans le système solaire

Les planètes sont l’aboutissement d’un long processus fait de déviations, de captures et de collisions. Les petit-corps, astéroïdes ou comètes sont les restes de la formation des planètes et témoignent de 4.6 milliards d’années d’histoire que nous reconstituons grâce à l’étude de leur composition et de leur répartition. Notre documentaire choisit alors de s’intéresser aux comètes pour mieux parler des planètes.

Destiné à une diffusion sur dôme plein et réalisé pour du relief omnidirectionnel, Planètes est notre troisième production pour planétarium après Galaktos. Réalisé en 2010, sorti en stéréoscopie en 2012, il constitue une avancée dans l’histoire technologique du spectacle puisqu’il est le premier film stéréoscopique pour planétarium. Au-delà de cet énorme travail technologique, un grand travail de recherche et de développement a été mené pour la seule conception d’outils internes utiles à la création d’objets astronomiques crédibles. Des outils qui nous ont permis d’élever le niveau de réalisme de nos images et de viser un juste milieu entre réalisme scientifique et esthétisme lisible, sans jamais oublier d’offrir du spectaculaire avant tout.

Quelques exemples des techniques déployées pour ce film :

 

  • Pour l’anneau d’astéroïdes de Saturne, nous avons rendu dans des animations procédurales les mouvements de milliers de blocs de glace en veillant à ce qu’ils ne foncent pas constamment sur la caméra.
  • La surface de Mars sur laquelle la caméra danse quelques secondes, lors d’une balade dans la zone de Valles Marineris, a été créée à partir des données altimétriques des images satellites.
  • Nous avons adapté la stéréoscopie au format très particulier du dôme. L’écran sur lequel nous projetons étant concave, la force du relief doit être ajustée en fonction de la distance de l’image par rapport aux spectateurs. Et notre grande réussite est d’avoir su conserver un relief sur une grande partie de l’écran alors qu’habituellement, plus on s’éloigne du centre, plus le relief s’estompe. Une technique que nous réutiliserons plus tard dans l’Aveugle aux yeux d’étoiles.
